The Agency was established in 2000. Since then it has undertaken numerous studies and consultancies in South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria.

The members of ERA have extensive expertise and experience in

  • the design, management and execution of applied research projects;
  • monitoring and evaluation studies;
  • training in a wide range of research methods and techniques.

    Applied Research Projects

    ERA has provided technical expertise and input into the design of applied studies in the social sciences for various clients. In addition, we have also conducted numerous multi-method studies of an interdisciplinary nature.

    Monitoring and evaluation studies

    ERA has conducted numerous monitoring and evaluation studies including implementation evaluation and impact assessment studies. We provide technical advice and support to organizations in developing their own M&E frameworks and instruments and assist them in writing evaluation reports. We also advise departments in the development of an M&E strategy.

    Research training

    ERA has provided workshops and courses in a wide variety of research methods and skills, including the following:
    • Monitoring and evaluation methods
    • Research design and project management
    • Questionnaire design
    • Introduction to social statistics
    • Qualitative data analysis
    • Scientific report writing
    • Observation and interviewing methods
    • Introduction to various scientific software programmes, such as SPSS and Atlas.ti

    Research advice and consultation services

    ERA has advised research institutions, NGOs, government departments and other organisations, as well as individuals, on a variety of research-related matters, including:
    • The development of an M&E framework and system
    • Research capacity building and training needs
    • The development of an integrated research portfolio
    • Data management and research information needs
    • Analysis of both Quantitative and Qualitative Data

    ERA has assisted various institutions with either training in quantitative or qualitative analysis. This has involved training of teams at institutions in analysis and writing up of findings.
